OK children, storytime. Once upon a time Soulhuntre
decided he was just dying to share all this cool stuff he finds on the web with
his less surf inclined friends and relatives. A mailing list was born and continues
to thrive to this day*.
Story Time: See children, Soulhuntre is a product of several gods. Their names
are "talent", "apathy", "sloth", "anger",
"pride"and "greed". These traits have combined to create
the kind of person who is poor, yet refuses to take a job because he hates having
to kiss someone else’s ass. So he has been self employed pretty much for his
whole adult life and likes it. Others call him a "bum" but he calls
himself an "Entrepreneur".
Since I am an Internet
Entrepreneur that means I am in front of my machine something like 19 hours
a day begging strangers for money**. I write code, chat, trade an enormous amount of e-mail – but the most
important thing I do is ‘graze’ the web. This is not just surfing for amusement,
though that is part of it, but it is a crucial aspect of what I do for a living
and how I do it.
Grazing is how I fill up on the thousands of little details I need to be able
to make decisions for clients and my own company… a Slashdot
article here, a post on the Linux
"Kernel
Traffic" developers list there and a lot of surfing the Microsoft
Knowledge Base on the side. These things add up to give me a feeling for
industry trends and technology issues.
I can’t even count how many times I have been able to solve a problem for a
client or suggest just the right software because of something I heard, saw,
or read on the ‘net the day before.
In any case, I spend a lot for time surfing – and I can pretend it’s business.
Along the way I come across lots of stuff that is silly, scary,
odd or just plain funny. I see designs that are good and bad, I see meat
rotting and guys spitting out bad
candy. On a good day I see a lot of Britney
Spears.
All of this went onto my mailing list, and they liked it I think. It’s just
that now I have a craving to share with you – my larger audience. There are
11 people on my mailing list*** and there might be as many as 20 people who read
my webpage!
