This MetaFilter thread reminded me I hadn’t been to the about-face.org gallery of offenders in a while to look at the latest fashion images (if they hate ’em, I’ll probably like ’em). So I fired up the browser…
OK, I’m not going to waste a whole lot of time on this, because frankly anyone who has read much of what I write know what my thoughts about some of the fringe elements of the [[e2:feminist]] movement are. could go on about it I suppose… but what’s the point tonight? I’m tired and I’m in a good mood. Suffice to say I disagree with much of the flakiness you’ll find there.
Anyway, one thing led to another and I wound up surfing some of the feminism links – this led to to the message boards over at ‘Ms.’ magazine and a veritable cornucopia of self congratulatory weirdness. Here are the more amusing threads – in no particular order of angst except for the first one, which is what actually caught my attention.
Secretary, the Movie – amazing, most of them didn’t even see it and they hated it.
Other threads of amusement
- What the hell is wrong with these parents (follow up thread) – they are not, repeat not big fans of the current popularity of modeling sites on the web. of particular note this article has them frothing. BTW – they mention a model named “Bobbi Jo” (see image), she is managed by Soopermodels, a legitimate agency. Best quote: “Was shit like this really needed? Describing her as “all woman” is sick, and there is no excuse for his opening paragraph. What an asshole.”. the article generated some internet discussion as well.
- ‘we have a potential rapist on k5’ – this one is particularly amusing because these same two people are apparently still going at it more than a year later!
- new Buffy and Angel thread – they talk about this a lot. Lots of Faith/Willow fantasies (that’s not a bad thing). did you know Willow has a weblog (sorta)?
- tarting a new Buffy thread – obviously, [[Buffy]] is big here.
- Any Eddie Izzard fans – the love [[Eddie]], you know… like you do.
- Beautiful… – lots of gnashing of teeth here. They obviously don’t like [[Christina]] but they like the message of this song.. what is a good fringer supposed to do? Wait! Yes, attack Christina because clearly she is only pretty due to all “tricks”. Remember, if your not persecuted enough you can’t really be a feminist.
- Avril Lavigne – guess what? They don’t like [[Avril]] either. I know, you can’t imagine how this could be… they are being so open minded thus far. Best quote? “As for Avril Lavigne, insulting a seventeen year old girl because she’s been duped into becoming a representative for a culture that oppresses her is pretty sad.”
- Tori Amos & Feminism – oh, and [[Tori]] Amos isn’t feminist enough for them. These people freak me out. I love Tori, and to say that she isn’t a strong feminist is just stupid.
- A Bubblegum Duo Sets Off Squeals & Squirms – take a wild guess how [[TATU]] went over. Not conventionally attractive (but damn hot) and lesbian, you would think they would be well received? Nope 🙂 (the other thread is like that too)
- Kylie Bloody Minogue – poor [[Kylie]]. Too popular to live.
- Another Ani thread – they like [[Ani]].
- Yet another sexist show- women are so ugly. – of course, “What not to Wear” wasn’t going to go over well.
- R Kelly accused child molester – sheer apoplexy, momentarily derailed by infighting and flames. Best quote: “No Jihada, see, unlike the MacDworkinites…”
- Notorious C.H.O. – apparently it was as funny as they hoped, but they lovd the politics. Infighting broke out.
- plastic surgery – does feminism mean being free to bow to the will of the patriarchy? Hilarity ensues.
- Reality Check re size, weight, etc. – angst about size, anger at the patriarchy (get used to that) and the interesting tidbit that the often misquoted idea that Marilyn Monroe was a size 12 doesn’t mean what some of those with size issues think it does. Amusement 🙂
- Girls Gone Wild Gone Mainstream Movie – here’s a shocker, they don’t like the idea.
- Girls Gone Wild creator arrested. much gloating, patting on backs, dreams of violence and plans for real world harassment. Most amusing post? “Who’s scarier? Us, or a perverted man getting turned on by 17 year old girls? Get your fucking priorities straight.”. I’ll bite, vigilante feminists are.. because there are lots of really, really hot 17 year olds out there and to pretend that that isn’t so is just silly.
