That, my friends is the EVS Web. A carbon fiber knee brace with some serious protection. They are also around $350 a pop. You can see some pictures of this and other items of off the shelf armor in the gallery.
My right knee is pretty blown. It gives out on me when I step wrong and makes me and others quite nervous. My left isn’t that bad yet but I don’t want to take too many chances with it, its a bit weak. Anyway I have the money together to order one of them – so for my right leg it is. I am going to wok on putting together the scratch for the left one ASAP because the last thing I need is a serious injury on the left side as well.
One of the guys at my [[e2:Dojo]] is a [[e2:chiropractor]] and a sports therapy guy. He will be helping me do some strength work on the knees so help avoid future injuries as well. In the meantime it is fairly stressful. While the pair of them at $700 is a lot of money, a full on knee injury for some who is uninsured is a much more disturbing prospect.
Pros:
- Provide great impact protection, a lot of carbon fiber there
- The hinge and brace interface looks awesomely strong
- The knee cup looks functional
- Looks great
- The reviews seem good
- EVS answered my questions well on the phone
- You can buy off the shelf graphic decals for them ๐
Cons:
- The “crumple zone” makes me a little nervous about durability
- They are designed to flex a little, that is somewhat disturbing
- Earlier bad experiences posted online, but that was about the old buckle attachment system (glue) instead of the new one I think… they don’t appear to rely on any glue joints now
- I think the straps will be uncomfortable
p.s. I probably won’t wear the knee shield portion to the Dojo ๐
