Lots to cover… so lets make it fast. Here is a quick wrap up on those “missing” explosives that Kerry spent so much time trying to turn into a problem or a scandal. I don’t have time to link to sources for each conclusion here… follow the links after the list and you’ll get all the info.

In short, Kerry got all excited about a charge of missing explosives he couldn’t prove only to have it turn out we did exactly t he right thing. In the meantime, he made a dramatic case about the incompetence of the UN, the need to go to war swiftly and how dangerous Saddam was. Thanks for the help!

Talking Points

  • Far from being incompetent, the US military turns out to have secured more than 200 tons of explosives from that site – almost exactlyw hat the UN claims was there – though conflicting UN reports make it impossible to square them for sure.
  • It is clear that before the war, while under [[wp:IAEA]] seal explosives were going missing. The IAEA itself reported that is security was inadequate.
  • Kerry spent a lot of time harping on how dangerous this stuff was, all the while effectively justifying the war timing. See, if these explosives are as dangerous ad Kerry claims, then we needed to secure them because the UN was doing a bad job.
  • Even had the been stolen, 400 tons is less than 1% of all the explosives the US seized after the invasion.
  • The rumor of the missing explosives came from a UN official with possible corruption ties to Saddam and who has recently been in conflict with the US about his job.
