There was a /. thread about multi-tools and it sucked me in. A long time ago Kimiko got me a Leatherman Multi-Tool as a gift and it has been at my side ever since. There are some things abou it that I would change but I hadn’t seriously considered replacing it. It is awesome.
That being said, the thread brought me to a great review of the new Leatherman offerings. While the Wave initially caught my eye it is the Charge Ti and XTi that have my lust. I am having a hard time picking a favorite between them. As a bonus the tool adapter I already own will fit nicely.
- The XTi has two bit holders, and a nice strap cutter on the back of the saw
- The XTi has a crimper in the pliers
- The Ti pliers have more gripping surface
- The Ti has scissors and a solid flat bladed screw driver in addition to one bit holder
The scissors I won’t miss, and the strap / rope cutter seems like a very good idea in my life. The second bit holder is nice, but I will miss a nice heavy small flat piece of metal to jam, twist, chisel and pry with. Now that I type that, I think I am leaning to the Ti…. that pry bar is something I have used a lot – and the interchangeable bits means it’s OK if I only have one. Then again, that solid driver blade has been a problem on the past.
update: I changed my mind, I much prefer the XTi. That cutting hook is too tempting.
I also found a pair of cool “little” tools that will be awesome to have someday…
