The insults I am more than happy to ignore. It is about par for the course here at Ms. for someone to be personally attacked and insulted for saying something another poster disagrees with. Flaming seems to be the primary mode of interaction 🙂

I will make a comment about one item though, because it is dangerous for those looking for information to be so misled.

If they can’t teach you how to fight on the ground, where a HUGE percentage of the altercations wind up – ignore the school.

Of course Soulhuntre is full of it or else has been watching too many kung fu movies. IRL, first punch usually wins, and they don’t get up and start sparring with you or wrestling with you on the ground. **giggle**

“in real life” the first punch rarely carries with it the power or damage needed to prevent an opponent from continuing to fight if they choose. It is important for those looking into self defense to understand that they can continue to fight even after they have been struck most of the time.

Does the first blow end a large number of “real life” altercations? You bet. Many people simply lock up when and if they are struck… they are shocked that it happened and don’t have any idea how to react.

But this is exactly the response someone looking to defend themselves must avoid or overcome. You want to learn how to function when faced with violence from an attacker, not lock up.

However, it is simply untrue to say that the “first punch” ends most real life altercations. When firearms are not involved and harm is intended they usually wind up on the ground. Untrained people wind up ont he ground because it is much easier to knock someone over than almost anything else, and many trained people wind up their because unless you are going to break someones badly the majority of control comes on the ground.

Remember that a large number of males had some wrestling in their educational time, they will often fall back on this when they get into trouble in a “stand up” fight.

If you don’t know how to handle an altercation that has gone to the ground, you are at a serious disadvantage. Anyone who sees many fights IRL knows it… and anyone who tells you you will always be able to take someone out with a single punch is just lying to you "[Smile]"

it’s simple, if you are looking for self defense, especially if you are looking to defend yourself in a rape situation… you absolutely must know how to handle it if you fall, are tripped or taken down to the ground. If it never happens thats great. If you can take your attacker out while your standing even better. But it would be insane in my mind not to have ground fighting as a final defense.

Hate me if you want. Ignore me. Whatever. But if your looking to defend yourself find someone you trust and ask them if you should add ground defense to your training. Don’t pretend you’ll never need it.
