A list I am on was having a discussion about third person speech. I don’t have time to discuss it at length, but I’ll put up here the basics of a reply I posted about how it is used that touched on protocol. As I am re-defining mine for a secret project, this is a good time to think of such things.

Of course. Third person speech is, to my mind, primarily a last resort for a submissive. It is used when one must refer to themselves or their preferences at all. Often, there is no need for them to do so. When it is used, the appropriate usage is often one that re-enforces place.<\/i><\/p>\n

 Think of it in terms of escalating formality.<\/i><\/p>\n

 (0 – extremely casual) “I would like to see that movie”<\/i><\/p>\n

 (1 – protocol, but casual) “Sir, your girls would like permission to see this movie”<\/i><\/p>\n

 (2 – medium protocol) “Sir, this movie might be of interest” – ONLY if they feel it might be of interest TO ME. Their own interest level is no longer an issue at all.<\/i><\/p>\n

 (3 – high protocol) * crickets * I didn\u2019t ask a question, and initiating is not their place.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
