I am not sure if the moderators will approve this one on StrictlyDs, but I am putting it up here anyway so that those who aren’t on the list can follow along. See, this whole consent discussion has really bent some people out of shape. Something about tie following type of honesty really upsets people:

“Every day humans make unilateral decisions that effect others, sometimes with lethal consequences, based on imperfect information. I am simply honest in my admission that I do it in this area of my life” – Soulhuntre 09/08/2004 on StrictlyDs

But then I made this comment and things got interesting…

“Others have made the same comment. I do not, myself, agree… but then I obviously do not since I would not myself feel that rape was ethical in almost every instance I can imagine.

(There is my honestly thing again, I can in fact imagine a circumstance where rape was ethical – as an interrogation technique in a war to acquire information likely to prevent large loss of life when it is strongly indicated the prisoner had such information)” – Soulhuntre 09/08/2004 on StrictlyDs

I was accused of all sorts of things from being a casual rapist to a (once again) sociopath. All because peopel didn’t bother to read… they just got all “triggered” and bent out of shape. I think that’s why discourse in this country sucks so deeply; everyone has been given license by [[wp:Oprah]] and [[wp: Dr. Phil]] to let their feelings run their actions. My response is below. I removed all the identifying info from the headers, and I had to edit it to just my comments to comply with list rules.

[ a comment that I am advocating the disregard of others rights in favor of my own and that I see people as objects for gratification. The most important one is “Justification for actions that are obviously morally wrong.”.

The conclusion was that I am “wandering closer and closer” to the edges of being a [[wp:sociopath]]. This is a new one, I thought I was a [[wp:psychopath]] ]

Well, apparently this little side eddy of the discussion isn’t going to go away, so I’ll comment. It would be nice if my thoughts and comments could be kept in their context – but that won’t happen. I suspect this is all off topic but I don’t really think I am supposed to just sort of sit here while things I didn’t say or things I did say are taken out of context and used to armchair diagnose me. At least I hope not 🙂

See, sometimes things that are “obviously morally wrong” in one instance is not so under other extreme circumstances.

Shooting someone dead violates their “rights”. It disregards their wishes, their consent and their feelings in favor of something you value more than those things of theirs. It is, usually, “obviously morally wrong”. Agreed? They probably did not consent to being killed, and they probably don’t want to be killed.

Now, since I specifically mentioned an extreme circumstance ( war ) in my aside lets look at the same circumstance. A war. People get shot in wars. People are non-consensually murdered. They are attacked, done violence to and hurt in wars.

So, are all soldiers sociopaths? I am curious. Is it always true that putting things you value above the wishes, consent or desires of others makes one sociopathic?

Because that was the specific context of my comment about rape. That under extreme, specific circumstances with a high probability of it saving a large number of lives I would have to consider it. Exactly the same circumstances in which I would ALSO consider killing someone against their will (that’s what war is).

Or is it that in war we may consider mass killing, bombing, shooting and maiming but to consider rape suddenly makes one a sociopath?

You know, I don’t mind when I I >did< say is disagreed with or brings down anger. It’s when people react to something I didn’t say, or skew my words that it starts getting old.
