Note: Unless something really interesting happens, this is probably my last post on this topic. The limited amusement value it all had (if any) is about done and you’re probably about as bored with it as I am.

When I was out at Floating World over the weekend I was asked by a few people whether I was “really mad” about the recent flamage tossed at me and a few others by Maymay. Several people took a moment to try and tell me that in their opinion Maymay hadn’t “really meant it” and “thought he was being funny”. They pointed out to me what a quiet guy he is in person and how out of character such an attack was. There was some concern that I might take it all too seriously.

Hopefully I set their minds at ease. I made sure they knew that there was almost no way I could take that post less seriously 🙂

What was interesting to me is how often folks pointed out that “Maymay isn’t really like that”. The thing is, I know. I have met Maymay before as well as seeing him speak on panels and so on. Heck, I attended a panel that he shared with Tatsumi. His response to my comments during the panel was polite, intelligent and on topic. That’s sort of my point – I don’t think “Maymay” is that much of an asshole. However “blog hero Maymay” certainly is.

To may people blogging is a phenomenon that makes almost no sense. They don’t understand why people pay any attention to blogs or bloggers. They have this idea that bloggers are, by and large, pompous windbags who use their blog as a pulpit to launch fairly insulting screeds that they would never consider communicating in another forum or fashion. It is posts like the one in question that show me why they think that.

I have no question that had we discussed the issue in person Maymay and I would have shared a good chuckle on retrograde web designs, laughed about borked HTML and agreed that for sure Something Needs to be Done(tm). I am also fairly sure that in such a conversation Maymay would not have told me he thought I was too stupid to know what a tag was for. Funny how that might be an important point.

All in all it was a stupid post written in what I might charitably characterize as a moment of light headed egotism. Or maybe he thought it was funny. Of course the idea that it was a misguided joke kind of falls flat when you read the comments where Maymay continues to attempt to be condescending and do some sort of technological dick thumping. Frankly I don’t know or care. It’s just not that big a deal.

Am I “really mad”? Nope – it’s not that important to me. However I am not going to pretend that it wasn’t posted, nor will I pretend is wasn’t stupid, childish and insulting. It’s just one of those factors that goes into your evaluation of someone.

Speaking of comments a few showed up on the post that are pretty amusing so I’ll put some of it here for archival purposes…

“Wow. Criticism is pointless if you don’t have status? Who are you, Dick Cheney?” – comment by devastatingyet

My response?

Wow. Criticism is pointless if you don’t have status? Who are you, Dick Cheney?

Reading – it’s a good thing 🙂

You will note that I specifically mentioned (more than once) that Maymay made some good technical points and that those considerations were already being dealt with.

The portion of my post you quoted was dealing with (as it said) Maymay’s attitude – one of pointless, insulting flamage.
In fact, the portion you quoted was one where I was trying to consider alternatives that didn’t involve Maymay simply being a puffed up pain in the ass… but rather that maybe he was trying to be funny and that his tone was meant in a humorous way. My comment then was that such a tone (insult intended as humor) usually only works when the author and target have some prior connection that would mark such an attack as humor.

Then again, you certainly don;t have to let any of that get int he way of you being upset. If you would rather respond to an interpretation of my remarks that has nothing to do with what I said – you are welcome to do so :)” – comment by Soulhuntre

But devistatingyet wasn’t done with me ‘yet’! Nope, there was some pop psych left to hand out…

“Criticism is hard to hear. It usually takes me somewhere between a few seconds and a few hours to accept the assault to my ego and listen to actual content of the message. It can take longer if the message is delivered harshly, but ultimately it’s the content that matters.”- comment by devastatingyet

I commented…

“Criticism is easy to handle. The core points (that the design needs help, the calendar is obsolete and the code is ugly) are not only not in contention but points that we ourselves have brought up both internally and externally ourselves.

There is nothing about any of those points that causes any distress to me or anyone else in the IT group.

When it is delivered in a fashion so obviously condescending and insulting by someone who is trying to fashion themselves as a sort of blog hero figure it becomes laughable.

There is no reason to forget that the form of a message is part of it’s content.” – comment by Soulhuntre

Anyway – off to the dojo!
