{"id":791,"date":"2001-03-10T17:19:42","date_gmt":"2001-03-10T17:19:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.soulhuntre.com\/items\/date\/2001\/03\/10\/webdav-i-can-feel-my-mind-going\/"},"modified":"2001-03-10T17:19:42","modified_gmt":"2001-03-10T17:19:42","slug":"webdav-i-can-feel-my-mind-going","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/legacyiamsenseiken.local\/2001\/03\/10\/webdav-i-can-feel-my-mind-going\/","title":{"rendered":"WebDAV? &#8211; I can feel my mind going&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><u>WebDAV?<\/u><\/b> &#8211; I can feel my mind going&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>As you are no doubt aware, I live in a world dominated (professionally<br \/>\nanyway) by three big companies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Adobe<\/u> &#8211; the people who make <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshop\/main.html\">Photoshop<\/a><br \/>\n    exist in my life pretty much only for that one thing and maybe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/premiere\/main.html\">Premiere<\/a>.<br \/>\n    I have tried to like their other stuff&#8230; for a little while I thought <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/livemotion\/\">LiveMotion<\/a><br \/>\n    might have a clue but it doesn&#8217;t. I thought maybe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/golive\/main.html\">GoLive!<\/a><br \/>\n    might make sense &#8211; but it doesn&#8217;t. Oh yeah, I like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/aftereffects\/main.html\">After<br \/>\n    Effects<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><u>Microsoft<\/u> &#8211; Well, there is away too much stuff to list here. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/office\/\">Office<\/a>,<br \/>\n    <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/sql\/\">SQL Server<\/a>,<br \/>\n    <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/windows\/\">Windows<\/a><br \/>\n    and more. Add to that the gift they have given my life with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gotdotnet.com\/\">.NET<\/a><br \/>\n    and you get the idea. I tried hard to like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/frontpage\/\">Frontpage<\/a><br \/>\n    for web stuff&#8230; but it just isn&#8217;t good enough. Though I do use it for quick<br \/>\n    <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\">blog<\/a> entries<br \/>\n    because it is faster to bring up than my favorite tool.<\/li>\n<li><u>Macromedia<\/u> &#8211; They have been a good company for me, growing in<br \/>\n    importance. Professionally I wind up with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/software\/director\/\">Director<\/a><br \/>\n    every now and then, even though I think it is a dead end tool. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/software\/flash\/\">Flash<\/a><br \/>\n    has changed my life as a web developer and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/software\/ultradev\/\">Ultradev<\/a><br \/>\n    is the big brother of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/software\/dreamweaver\/\">Dreamweaver<\/a>,<br \/>\n    a pair of incredible tools. I even like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/software\/fireworks\/\">Fireworks<\/a>,<br \/>\n    though I don&#8217;t do my primary graphics in it &#8211; just post-production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now that I have sufficiently whored myself out in the hopes of a free <a href=\"http:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/subscriptions\/prodinfo\/overview.asp\">MSDN<br \/>\nUniversal<\/a> subscription we can get to my point. When one of my tools <i>has a<br \/>\nbug<\/i> that is in my main work path, it is a problem for me.<\/p>\n<p>Ultradev\/Dreamweaver has a bug in version 4. The bug is in the FTP module and<br \/>\nit makes for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/support\/dreamweaver\/ts\/documents\/virtual_path_ftp.htm\">some<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/support\/dreamweaver\/ts\/documents\/partial_transfer_ftp.htm\">real<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/support\/dreamweaver\/ts\/documents\/freeze_ftp.htm\">problems<\/a>.<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s OK though, I can get to my site another way &#8211; with something called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webdav.org\/\">WebDAV<\/a>.<br \/>\nWebDAV is the eventual successor to FTP for authoring websites anyway &#8211; so I<br \/>\ntried it a while back when I move to my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rackspace.com\">Rackspace<\/a><br \/>\nservers. It didn&#8217;t work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because the first version of WebDAV for Ultradev had bugs too. This was<br \/>\na real problem. Sure, I could use a third party FTP program, but it was pretty<br \/>\nimportant to keep the check-in\/check-out features. Wonder of wonders, it helped!
